Think big, create Brand India: President of India, Dr Abdul Kalam

India, EU enter into new strategic partnership

New Delhi, Nov. 14: The President of India, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, urged the industry "to think big with the whole world as our market by developing a strong and interactive technology-market-value adding competitive linkage". In a keynote address on Sunday, November 14, 2004 at the inauguration of 24th India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2004, on "creating brand institutions", Dr Kalam said that such a linkage would be a great resurgence for our manufacturing, marketing and maintenance services. Exhorting the Indian industry to become multinationals, the President said "We can win if we think we can win and act tenaciously with our clear goals in India to excel in a competitive new world and create India Brand". Dr Kalam said IITF could be the unique window of knowledge for smart and intelligent minds to understand the strength of competitiveness. As technology powers the competitiveness, he said, the country could choose an integrated technology-driven path. The President also proposed the wider use of a slew of innovative technologies and enterprises such as application of information, communication technologies in agriculture, rural lighting through solar energy and electricity generation through municipal waste for rural prosperity. He urged the Indian industry to convert these areas into solid business propositions.

India rated among top three most attractive markets globally for Investment

India emerged as one of the top three most preferred locations for foreign direct investment worldwide, in the latest annual survey of world's largest companies by global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney. For the first time in the Index, India displaced the U.S. to become the second most attractive FDI location among manufacturing investors. Telecom & utility investors upgraded India from fifth to second most attractive FDI destination. India’s strong performance among manufacturing and telecom & utility firms was driven largely by their desire to make productivity-enhancing investments in IT, business process outsourcing, research and development, and knowledge management activities. The report says that India is increasingly perceived as a R&D hub for a wide range of industries.  A “wired” India has played to its strength which is a well-educated, IT savvy workforce with English-language proficiency.

The Hague, Nov 8. (PTI): Taking their relationship to a new "Strategic Partnership" that seeks to expand bilateral trade and investment flows, India and the European Union condemned all acts of terrorism and pledged to take comprehensive and sustained measures to combat the mena-ce. Text Box: PM Manmohan Singh with Netherlands' PM and EC President Jan Peter"We stress that further strengthening cooperation in com-bating terrorism is a priority area for EU-India Action Plan for a Strategic Partnership that will seek to deepen theinternational consensus and enhance international efforts to combat terrorism," a joint statement issued at the end of the India-EU summit attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.  A comprehensive state-ment issued after Singh's summit meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, the current EU President, and European Commission President Roman Prodi observed that the partnership was based on a "sound foundation" of shared values and beliefs. It said that both sides would encourage holding of regular, institutionalized exchanges between the Indian and European Parliaments. "We agree to intensify cooperation and take action to facilitate and expand bilateral trade and investment flows, given the importance of realising the potential of growing India and EU markets and the mutual benefits of increased economic interaction," it said

Forex reserves cross $121-bn mark

India's foreign exchange reserves rose to a record $121.18 billion on October 29, said the Reserve Bank of India in its latest report.  It is expected that the accretion to the foreign exchange reserves would add greater momentum to bolder economic reforms and translate into higher levels of investment and growth. The surge in forex reserves level was noteworthy as it has been through non- debt creating inflows. Strong FII inflows, coupled with the increase in banking capita. As a result of historic growth in forex reserves, India had started prepaying foreign loans and retiring high cost foreign debt since last year.  India had, for the first time, become a lender to IMF during year 2003.

International patients turn to Indian hospitals

India's private health facilities which offer Quality service at reason-able cost are now attracting medical tourists from abroad. An advanced surgery in India is 10-15 times lower than anywhere in the world. For instance, British patients looking for speedier treatment at a fraction of the cost of going private in Britain are increasingly attracted to leading Indian hospital chains such as Apollo. These patients travel to India, get operated upon or receive the appropriate treatment within a day of landing and return to Britain at an affordable cost. A latest example is of James Campbell from Aberdeenshire, who feels he got his life back after undergoing operations on his knees in Ahmedabad recently. An arthritic, Campbell, 69, made the journey to India rather than wait two years for treatment on the National Health Service. He could no longer face the crippling pain in his knees, he said. Returning home, Mr. Campbell said: "It's the best thing I've ever done. I've finally got my life back. I was treated like royalty in the hospital over there. The staff and facilities were absolutely second to none. The place was so clean you could have eaten food off the floor”. The former shop manager said: "Flying over there for treatment may sound daunting to people but it's something I would highly recommend. ”Making that journey has allowed me to make the most of my retirement, instead of spending time cooped up in the house waiting for an operation," said the British citizen.

India is the land of IT opportunity, says Fortune

Despite the small revenue they earn compared to their global competitors like Accenture and IBM, Indian IT services companies led by TCS, Infosys and Wipro have caught the attention of top infotech companies, said a recent issue of Fortune. The article said that the genesis of Indian IT services industry led by TCS, Infosys and Wipro was outsourcing, and outsourced jobs were coming up in every major Indian city. "They (the big IT companies) have the advantage of stronger brands. We are working on that. But they have no experience with the global delivery model, we are masters at it," the magazine quoted Bangalore-based Wipro chairman Azim Premji as saying.

Terming India as a 'land of opportunity', Fortune said that in Mumbai there would be about 62,050 outsourcing and IT workers focussing on financial research, back office, software led by Morgan Stanley, TCS, Citigroup, Mphasis and i-Flex Solutions. In Delhi, there would be about 73,000 IT professionals of Indian companies doing both captive and outsourcing jobs where the focus is call centres, transaction process-sing, ship design and software spearheaded by GE, American Express, ST Microelectronics, Wipro Spectramind, Convergys and Daksh. The hot spot Bangalore has the highest number of IT professionals at 1,09,500 working for Intel, IBM, SAP, SAS, Dell, Cisco, Texas Instrument, Motorola, HP, Oracle, Yahoo, America Online, Accenture, Wipro, Infosys and Msource. Bangalore focuses on chip design, software, bio-informatics, call centres, tax processing and IT consulting, the magazine said.Chennai, with its 51,000 IT professionals is focusing on software, transaction processing, animation, and World Bank, Standard Chartered, Cogizant, Polaris, EDS, Pentamedia Graphics are operating from there. Hyderabad has 36,500 IT workers working for HSBC, Satyam, Microsoft. These companies along with others are undertaking works like product design, back office and software. On the other hand, Kolkata with its 7300 infotech populace is undertaking high-end work like consulting and software. PwC, IBM, TCS, ITC Infotech have got base there. Pune is another city bristling with IT activity with chip design, embedded software and call centres, Fortune said.

State of the Indian economy: Manufacturing boom & India's growth

India's industrial production is on a roll. It grew 7.9% in August ’04 on the back of a more than 8% expansion of manufacturing output, sustaining the growth momentum seen over the year. The outlook for the Indian economy remains moderately optimistic and the growth rate picked up to 8.9% in July from 7.9% in June 2004.  Everybody who loves the Indian economy loves to talk about breaking the 8% growth per annum barrier. And they talk about how services will fuel India’s economic growth.
